Can a Stun Gun Stop a Dog Attack?

When out on a walk, whether walking your own pup or out by yourself, a stun gun can be a useful tool to help keep you protected from an aggressive dog or coyote. In many cases just shocking a stun device in the air for 1-2 seconds deter a dog and scare it off. Their ears are highly sensitive to the electric shock emitted stun devices.

A stun baton is a great recommendation because it gives you an additional reach so that you can use the device without getting too close to an aggressive dogs mouth and stun batons have the added benefit of being able to be swung like a bat. A stun baton can extend your reach from around 13 to 19 inches. They don’t fit in a pocket but most the models include a belt clip or holster for easier carrying. If a stun baton is too long for you, a stun flashlight would also be a good alternative since it slightly extends your reach.

For hiking, a walking stick is a great recommendation. Many people who avidly hike are concerned about crossing paths with a coyote, the ZAP Hike ‘n Strike Stun Hiking Staff was made just for this situation.

Stun batons and stun flashlight are legal in most states without restrictions, please see Stun Gun and Taser Laws for more information.
