How to Use a Stun Gun – Self Defense 101

Learn these important facts and tips that you need to know to get the most out of a stun gun personal protection device. These basics will help you increase your self defense knowledge and improve your ability to safely fight off an unwanted attacker. Let’s get started:

Familiarize yourself with the stun gun before turning it on. Read the information manuals that came with the unit so that you can easily recognize your stun gun’s unique features. Locate the ON/OFF switch, safety switch, and trigger. Practice holding it in your hand and find a comfortable position for holding it, turning it on, and using it. Once you are familiar with the unit’s design, insert the batteries and prepare to test the unit. DO NOT TOUCH the metal contact probes. Stun guns work by paralyzing the body with high voltage electricity, interrupting communication between the brain and muscles for a short time.

To test the device, be cautious to keep your body and fingers clear of the contact probes. Turn off the safety switch if there is one and press the trigger, an electric charge will fire across the metal contact probes. As long as you hold the trigger, the device will continue to fire the charge across the probes. To cease firing, release the trigger. When testing the unit for the first time, it is best to fire in short 1-2 second intervals. After firing, return the safety switch to on (if there is a safety) and turn OFF the unit, do not touch the contact probes for 5-10 minutes after firing.

To use the device, hold the contact probes firmly against the attacker. The best target areas to aim for are on the neck and torso, particularly the under arm, upper shoulders, groin, and upper hip (below the rib cage). These areas are nerve centers and the electrical current is more likely to affect the whole body when struck here, however the stun gun will work when touched to any body part. Hold it against the attacker for 3-5 seconds; maybe longer if the person is large or is continuing to pursue you, this should repel your attacker giving you enough time to get away. The voltage of your device is also important, if you have a low voltage stun gun (under 500,000 volts) you may have to hold it against an attacker longer to get the desired effect. If you touch the attacker, the current will not pass back into your body.

Practice and keep it ready. It is extremely important to practice using your device before you carry it with you. Make sure you are comfortable that you can use it if you need to. When carrying it, keep it in a convenient, easy to open location, or carry it in your hand in situations where you could foresee having to access it to deter an attacker. A quick access belt holster is always a good option, easy to get out and turn on; when necessary, just the act of firing your stun gun in the air towards an attacker can be enough to scare them off, deterring an attack. If you find yourself in a situation where you need to use your stun gun, use it to give yourself time to get to safety and find help. Seek help in an area that is well lighted and has other people, then call the police while the incident is fresh in your mind!
